Fast food is enjoyed by millions of people every single day. The relative cheapness and quickness of these meals are great for those too busy or tired to prepare a meal for themselves. For some people, fast food has become a staple of their diets and many of these people do not realize the effects this has on their body. The film Super Size Me showed how the high fat, high sodium meals from these restaurants can set the groundwork for inflammatory diseases, as Morgan Spurlock went a month of only eating fast food items. Although most people are not at that extreme of food consumption, it is important to have some information about the dangers fast food poses.

Most fast foods are typically high in fat, carbohydrates, and salt. The effect of these meals is flooding the blood stream with inflammatory components that overwhelm the body’s natural immune system. Studies have shown that these inflammation factors can remain in the body for as much as four hours after the meal is ingested. Chronic inflammation is the trigger for a host of diseases such as arthritis, tendinitis, and heart disease.

Fast food is also notoriously low in fiber. Fiber is removed from most of these types of food because it takes too long to cook and has a very short shelf life. Getting enough fiber in your diet is important for preventing many diseases and ailments. It is especially important in its role against heart disease. Fruits and vegetables high in fiber have been shown to have a positive influence on ones cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The regulation of blood sugar levels also reduces the danger of developing diabetes.

Many foods also contain an alarming amount of additives and preservatives that can cause problems when eaten in large amounts. Two of the most well known about additives are mono sodium glutamate (MSG) and trans fats.

MSG is added to foods as a flavor enhancer, and it can cause very adverse reactions in people who are especially sensitive to it. MSG has been used as a food additive for decades, but anecdotal reports have linked MSG to a number of ailments including headache, flushing, sweating, numbness, chest pain, and nausea. Although not everyone are at risk for these symptoms, those who do experience it should avoid foods containing MSG.

The amount of trans fats in these items are also cause for concern. Trans fats are typically used in foods as both a flavor enhancer and as a shelf life extender. These unsaturated fats are now being almost universally recognized as a cause of degenerative chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

It’s disgusting the effects that MSG has on our bodies. It’s also amazes me that MSG has not been ban in America yet. You’d figure that we would be able to find a healthier solution to flavor our food. Good post, very educational.

Good post, very helpful.
